The ancient Indian figure Siddhartha Gautama, now commonly referred to as simply “Buddha,” was a sage who lived around 500 BC. His influential teachings are the philosophies on which Buddhism was founded. The word Buddha means “awakened one” or “enlightened one.” The universally recognized symbol of Buddha has been depicted in countless works of art throughout the ages, and has also been a longstanding representation in jewelry. Traditionally shown in a state of deep meditation, Buddha represents a harmonious balance of both wisdom and inner peace.
A wonderful jade Buddha ring from the Art Deco (ca1920) era! This lovely piece is made of 14kt yellow gold and features an artistic jade plaque that rests in the center of a decorative enameled mounting. The jade displays a beautiful natural green color marbled with pale milky hues throughout. The hand-carved image is of a traditional happy Buddha who has fine facial features and folds within his sack clothing. Surrounding the jade plaque is a light green enameled border and a swirled design at each shoulder. The shank tapers in towards the back and is stamped “14K” inside, along with a small hallmark symbol. A very special Art Deco era piece, it looks fabulous when worn and would make a unique addition to any collection!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 5.75, but could be easily resized if desired. The teardrop shaped centerpiece measures 3/4″ tall and 1/2″ wide.
Condition: Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or jade plaque, which is intact. There are some areas on the enamel design that are gently worn which can be expected from a ring of this era. This does not distract from the beauty when worn.
