French paste is a Vintage jewelry term used to describe the practice of using faceted cut glass, cut in the shape of a real gemstone, instead of using real gems. This process, which was developed in the 1700’s, created the look of a sparkling gemstone or diamond but cost much less than real stones.
A stunning pair of French paste earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! These decorative earrings are handset with sparkling French paste stones that rest within a gold filled setting. At the top of each earring is a ball-shaped topper sandwiched between filigree caps. Dangling below is a long, conical-shaped link, each side of which displays a row of graduated French paste stones amidst lovely filigree detail. Completing the design is a row of fringe that dangles at the bottom, adding lovely movement when worn. A wonderful and ornate pair of Victorian earrings, they make a beautiful statement and would compliment any jewelry collection!
Measurements: The earrings hang 2.5″ long, and measure 3/8″ at the widest and thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold-plated setting or wires, and all of the French paste stones are intact.
